How do you work out where your customers actually look?
Ask the last ten customers how they found you, because the honest answer is usually a short list. A homeowner wanting an electrician types it into Google or asks in a Facebook group. A housebuilder awarding a brickwork package searches Google, checks the firm on LinkedIn and asks around. A parent wanting a tutor increasingly asks an AI assistant as well as Google. The channel that matters is the one your buyer uses at the moment they decide to look, and everything else is somewhere to be seen later.
Search Console and your Google Business Profile will show what people already type to find you. If the searches you want to win are in there, search is your first channel. If they are not, you have found the first gap.
Why is Google search still the first channel for most Leeds businesses?
Because people arrive there with a need already formed, and a search for a service with Leeds after it is as close to a raised hand as marketing gets. Someone typing commercial flooring contractor Leeds wants a flooring contractor this week. Nobody scrolling Instagram was looking for one. That is why SEO and local SEO carry the most weight on this site: they put you in front of the buyer at the exact moment, and they keep doing it without a bill attached to every click.
RB Electrical in Halifax is the clearest example we have. A page for each service, EV charging among them, with enough on it to rank on its own, has brought in an average of around two organic leads a week for five years, at roughly a five to one return on the investment.
When does Google Maps matter more than the website?
When the customer wants somebody nearby and wants them now. Trades, clinics, garages, restaurants and anyone with a van get a large share of their enquiries from the map results, where the Google Business Profile does the job of a whole website: reviews, photographs, opening hours and a call button. For those businesses the profile is a channel in its own right. It needs real photographs of jobs, a steady flow of reviews with replies and the right categories set, and it needs somebody checking it every month.
Dolphin Heating in Huddersfield built everything around the phrase people actually type, female gas engineer Huddersfield, and is number one on Google for it, with the AI answer naming the business too.
Where do AI search and the assistants fit in?
Alongside search, as the newest place a Leeds buyer draws up a shortlist. Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity all answer the question of who to use with a handful of names, and those names come from the same evidence Google ranks: clear service pages, reviews, case studies and mentions on other sites. The work of being named there has a label, GEO or generative engine optimisation, and it is built on top of the SEO. Educamus Tuition, an online and at-home tuition business, has used us as its outsourced marketing team for over three years, across the website, search visibility, content and wider marketing, and its turnover more than doubled in the first year of working together.
Bond Brickwork, whose Swarcliffe site in east Leeds we photograph from the drone, is at the top of Google for the commercial brickwork searches that matter and is recommended by AI search as well.
Which social media channel is worth a Leeds business’s time?
One, run properly, chosen by where your buyers are. LinkedIn for anyone selling to other businesses, which covers construction, property and professional services. Facebook and Instagram for consumer trades and anything local and visual. YouTube for both, because a filmed job ranks in Google as well as on YouTube and is the most believable evidence you can publish. Jack Lunn, the Leeds main contractor, puts filmed developments on LinkedIn for exactly that reason, and the result has been LinkedIn growth and engagement that makes the marketing as recognisable as the family name.
Spreading thin across five platforms gives you five neglected feeds. Pick the one your buyers use and post real work on it.
When should a Leeds business pay for Google Ads or paid social?
When speed, a competitive search or a test matters more than the cost per enquiry. Google Ads can put you on page one within days for a search that might take a year to rank for, which makes it the right channel for a new service, a new area or a quiet month. Paid social suits offers and reaching a defined audience that is not searching yet. Both are rented visibility, and the enquiries stop when the budget stops, so we treat them as a way to buy time while the owned channels build, with conversion tracking in place before a pound is spent so you can see what each click produced.
The order we usually recommend is the order on this page: search and Maps, then AI visibility, then one social channel fed with video, then paid wherever there is a gap worth paying to close.
